How to Set up a Bot to trigger with the click on the chat widget icon

In this article, we will explain how to create a bot with the ‘Visitor clicks on chat icon’ trigger. With that trigger, the Tidio chat widget will open when the visitor clicks on your chat icon.

If you’d like to have a simple chat button on your website and send an automated message only when a visitor actually opens the chat – this guide is for you!

Your initial automated message

Tidio automatically activates a chatbot on your website during the initial setup. The bot is created with the ‘First visit on site’ trigger, which displays an automated message immediately when a new visitor arrives on your site.

Show a message after clicking the chat icon

To make sure your bot sends a message only when a visitor opens the chat, you need to change your chatbot’s trigger. Head to the Chatbots section and choose the bot you’d like to edit. Click on the ‘edit’ button to enter the bot editor.

Your bot might be using the ‘First visit on site’ trigger. The trigger is the first blue node at the top; it tells your bot when to start and send an automated message.

If you want this bot to send an automated message only if a visitor clicks on your chat’s icon – change the trigger to ‘Visitor clicks on chat icon.’ First, remove the current trigger; click on the trigger and then on the ‘X’ in the upper-right corner.

Then, open the Triggers menu on the right, choose the ‘Visitor clicks on chat icon‘ trigger, drag it onto the workspace, and connect the trigger with the next action in your bot’s flow (‘Send a chat message’ in our example).

All done! From now on, your message will appear in the chat’s widget only when a visitor clicks on your chat’s icon.

The button label

NOTE: Keep in mind that there is also a button label enabled in the chat’s widget by default. The button label shows a short message to your website visitors, encouraging them to send you a message. You can edit that message or turn it off completely. To do that, go to Channels > Live Chat > Appearance > Widget Settings > Button Label.

An example for using the ‘Visitor clicks on chat icon’ trigger

A great idea is to use the ‘Visitors clicks on chat icon’ trigger inside a custom FAQ bot. By using that trigger in such a bot, you can send your visitors a list with the most common inquiries and the bot will provide the necessary answers.
