Why route chat email through SendGrid?
Because it holds your sending domain, your suppression list and your reputation. Sending the same kinds of message from two systems is how somebody who unsubscribed gets an email anyway, and how a domain reputation slips without anybody noticing until delivery drops.
Should this handle marketing email too?
Keep the two separate in your own head even if SendGrid sends both. Transactional messages from a conversation should be exempt from marketing suppression rules but still respect a hard bounce, and mixing the logic is how a receipt fails to arrive.
